Greek Government and Opposition Clash Over Corruption and Tax Evasion
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis has defended the administration against allegations of corruption and cover-ups, asserting that enhanced oversight mechanisms and the judiciary are functioning effectively. Marinakis highlighted recent enforcement actions, noting that 5,500 individuals have faced charges and 259 criminal organizations have been dismantled. He reported that fines have exceeded 5 billion euros and tax evasion efforts have increased state revenue by 1 billion euros.
In response to these claims, the political party Niki has criticized the government, alleging a “complete collapse of the tax audit mechanism.” The party pointed to significant tax evasion scandals involving large chains, such as Pizza Fan, as evidence of systemic failure. Niki has called for the resignation of officials at the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) and questioned the security of the myData digital platform, demanding accountability and a thorough cleansing of oversight bodies.
