Greek Government Announces Anti‑Inflation Package Ahead of Thessaloniki Fair

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the government will unveil a three‑part economic plan aimed at curbing price inaccuracies, easing debt burdens and cutting taxes. The package, to be presented at the International Thessaloniki Fair, includes a new online platform, posokanei.gov.gr, that lets consumers compare supermarket prices across Greece and other EU countries, and maintains a profit‑margin ceiling on basic goods until the end of the month.

Additional measures target vulnerable households: the debt‑restructuring regime will lower the entry threshold to €5,000 and expand the 72‑installment scheme, while a temporary property‑acquisition agency will begin operating in September to protect first‑home owners. A tax‑relief package will reduce direct taxes for the middle class and increase wages and pensions. The government frames the initiatives as a response to rising inflation driven by higher energy costs linked to the Persian Gulf conflict and recent ECB rate hikes.
