Greek recycling housing scandal draws EU prosecutor probe

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the so‑called “recycling houses” scandal in the Attica region. The probe focuses on alleged irregularities and over‑pricing in contracts for waste‑management equipment and facilities, which together account for a budget of €350.5 million, with two‑thirds financed by burial‑fee levies.

The plan, presented by Attica regional governor Nikos Chardalias, has been criticised by opposition parties as a continuation of the previous administration’s procurement practices. Critics, including members of the Syriza party, claim the project echoes the earlier “recycling houses” controversy that diverted millions of European and public funds. The government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis faces pressure to address the allegations and to justify the spending, while a separate recycling‑deposit scheme promoted by DRS Hellas has also encountered legal objections from a Norwegian firm.

The scandal highlights concerns over waste‑management policy, public‑fund usage and the transparency of government contracts in Greece.
