Greek Government Moves to Privatize Water Supply

The two articles argue that the administration of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is preparing to treat water as a market commodity, following a series of privatizations of public assets such as the electricity provider DEI, the railway operator OSE, ports, airports and roads. The authors claim the government publicly asserts it will protect water’s social character while simultaneously planning to allocate water resources to private operators, which they say could lead to higher prices and monopolistic practices.

The pieces cite a broader pattern of neoliberal reforms that, according to the authors, have dismantled formerly public utilities and transferred them to private hands, warning that water may become subject to the same profit‑driven dynamics as other services.
