Greek Government Prioritizes Transport Modernization and Decentralization Reforms

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport George Kotziras outlined the government's plan to improve everyday mobility in Greece. The agenda focuses on road‑safety measures, railway upgrades, and a digital overhaul of transport administration. Urban transit in Athens and Thessaloniki will be expanded, with a target of adding modern buses to reach a fleet of about 1,700 in Attica within two years.

The Greek Local Government Association (ELAS) warned that Greece remains one of the most centralized states in Europe. It argued that simply shifting responsibilities and funding to municipalities will not solve inefficiencies unless local administrations gain the necessary expertise and staffing. ELAS cautioned against creating around 150 new municipalities without first strengthening administrative capacity, noting the risk of transferring central‑government weaknesses to the local level.
