Greek Government Proposes €400 Pension Supplement for Retirees

The Greek government is preparing a package of measures to raise the permanent pension supplement for retirees ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair. Current monthly aid of €300 could be increased to €400, or even to an amount equal to the national pension (about €447), effectively creating an extra state pension. The fiscal cost is estimated at €200‑300 million.

Other proposals include expanding eligibility to pensioners under 65, removing withholding taxes on supplementary pensions, and revising the Pension Solidarity Contribution to raise net earnings. Officials note that wage growth (≈28.5% since 2019) has outpaced pension increases (≈15.5% over the same period) while inflation has reached about 23%, eroding retirees' purchasing power.
