Greek government proposes ENFIA reform to tax closed homes and aid middle class

The Greek government is preparing a tax‑relief package that will be presented at the Thessaloniki International Fair. The plan includes a new ENFIA (property tax) model that would give larger reductions to owners who rent or sell properties that are on the market, while imposing higher rates on homes that remain empty and unused. The proposal aims to increase the supply of housing and address the country’s housing shortage without cutting overall tax revenue.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said the package also contains broader tax cuts for the middle‑income population and micro‑small enterprises, noting that recent measures have already lowered taxes for more than 4 million workers, pensioners and self‑employed people. The reforms are being drafted by Deputy Finance Minister Thanos Petralias and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakas and are expected to be announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the fair.
