Greek government sets new categories for Attica market vendors
A ministerial decision published in the Government Gazette (FEK B 4579/24‑07‑2026) establishes a new framework for professional sellers operating in the public markets of the Attica region. Sellers must register under one of nine distinct activity categories and may operate only within the chosen category. A six‑month transition period is provided. The categories cover fruits and vegetables, food and other consumables, fresh fish and aquaculture products, flowers and gardening items, canteens, household goods, clothing and footwear, white goods, and, for the first time, a dedicated pet‑related category that includes food, equipment, accessories and grooming supplies. Certain standardized agricultural products such as honey, olive oil, olives, natural juices and organic items may be offered in multiple categories depending on the nature of the activity. The Panhellenic Federation of Market Sellers (POSPLA) welcomed the regulation, describing it as a long‑awaited clarification that will make market operations more organized, and said it will monitor implementation during the transition.
The new categorisation aims to improve market organization, reduce ambiguity over product offerings, and ensure consistent regulatory oversight across Attica’s local markets.
