Greek Government to Propose Radio Licensing Bill by September

The Greek cabinet is preparing a draft law to license radio stations nationwide. Deputy Prime Minister Pavlos Marinakis and Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergios oversee the process, which will use a new application completed in April to update station data. A key issue is interference at airports, prompting the creation of a revised frequency map by a private office rather than the ministries.

Municipal stations will be exempt from licensing, with a list of dozens of local broadcasters named for exclusion. Marinakis said the bill will be presented to the cabinet by the end of September, after which licensing will proceed region by region – starting with Attica and then grouping smaller regions together. The reforms aim to bring order to a system that has been unresolved for 23 years and to clarify state advertising spending.
