Greek Government Unveils Economic Relief Package Ahead of EU Election

The Greek cabinet is preparing a broad set of measures aimed at easing household financial pressure as the country heads into the European Parliament elections. The plan includes a two‑month price freeze on supermarket items, tighter monitoring of fuel prices and a pledge that lower crude oil costs will be passed on at the pump.

In parallel, the government has activated a private‑debt settlement scheme. The non‑seizable limit on bank accounts has been raised to €1,600 and a 72‑installment repayment option for tax and social‑insurance debts will be available from 20 July, with the online platform remaining open through year‑end. The scheme will also extend to debts as low as €5,000 from 21 July, and new protections for primary residences are scheduled for September.

Together, these actions target retirees, public and private employees, freelancers and farmers, seeking to curb inflation and provide relief to the millions of Greeks facing high living costs and private debt burdens.
