Greek Government Unveils Employment Programs for Seniors and Lignite Plant Workers

The Public Employment Service (DYPA) will create 8,000 new public‑sector jobs for unemployed Greeks over the age of 55. The scheme, slated to open for applications in July, offers 24‑month contracts with a monthly salary of €920, subsidised at 75 % (capped at €750) by the state. It aims to help older workers acquire the remaining social security contributions needed for pension eligibility.

Separately, the Regional Governor of Western Macedonia, Giorgos Amanatidis, announced an upcoming meeting at the Ministry of Environment and Energy to address the impact of lignite‑plant closures. The discussion will involve DEI, the “Spartakos” union, local MPs and other stakeholders to design a rapid‑employment program for former plant workers, offering temporary public‑sector or private‑sector positions until new DEI investment projects commence.
