Greece launches debt‑restructuring platform for €5,000‑plus loans
From 27 July 2026 Greece’s tax authority (AADE) activated an online platform that allows debtors to settle overdue obligations through an out‑of‑court (extrajudicial) mechanism. The eligibility threshold was lowered from €10,000 to €5,000, extending access to about 300,000 additional borrowers. The scheme covers debts to the tax administration, social security funds, municipalities, banks and debt‑servicing companies, with up to 240 monthly instalments for public‑sector debts and up to 420 for bank‑related claims. Under certain conditions the programme can partially write‑off the debt.
A separate 72‑installment plan, already operational, lets eligible taxpayers restructure debts incurred before 31 Dec 2023 into up to 72 monthly payments of at least €30, at a fixed interest rate of 5.84 %. No income or asset tests apply. Within the first hours of the platform’s launch more than 2,000 applications were submitted, exceeding 500 per day. Roughly 1.3 million Greek taxpayers hold overdue debts totalling €31.5 billion, making the new arrangements a major component of the government’s effort to regularise fiscal arrears before the 31 Dec 2026 deadline.
