Greek health authority warns about fox encounters
Following recent incidents in which citizens were injured by foxes, the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (EODY) has issued public health guidance. The agency notes that foxes are increasingly appearing in residential neighborhoods, on beaches and in recreational areas across Greece.
EODY advises people not to approach, touch, or feed foxes, as feeding wild animals encourages habituation and raises the likelihood of contact or injury. Special caution is urged for children and pets. Although no confirmed animal rabies cases have been recorded in Greece since May 2014, 48 cases (mainly in foxes) were documented between 2012 and 2014.
Any bite, scratch, or exposure of fox saliva to broken skin or mucous membranes should be assessed by a health professional. Recommended first‑aid includes thorough washing of the wound with plenty of water and soap, followed by prompt medical evaluation for possible tetanus prophylaxis, antibiotics, or rabies post‑exposure treatment.
