Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis to appoint interim board of Panhellenic Medical Association

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced that a temporary governing committee will be appointed for the Panhellenic Medical Association (ΠΙΣ) on Monday, 27 July 2026. The appointment follows the publication of article 67 of Law 5322/2026 in the Government Gazette, which gives the minister authority to install a provisional board when the election results of the association cannot be validated.

The interim committee will organise new elections and restore “democratic legitimacy and regularity,” according to the minister, who added that there is “no room for delay” and that the outgoing eight‑year council had illegally scheduled a meeting for Tuesday. He pledged “good and calm elections” for doctors.

The association denounced the move as a “coup” that abolishes its self‑governance, while three European medical bodies (CPME, CEOM, UEMS) have issued statements condemning the legislation. Matina Pagoni, mentioned as a leading candidate for the interim presidency, said, “It seems natural to me, since I was first in the line.”
