Greek health system debt drops to €532 million as MedTech Conference warns of reimbursement delays

At the 12th MedTech Conference 2026, Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistocleous reported that hospital debts under the National Health System have been reduced to €532 million, down from previously much higher levels, and that unrecoverable debts have fallen to €63 million. He noted that subsidies to hospitals have risen to 120 % of 2019 levels and that the Recovery and Resilience Fund is financing 56 projects worth €1.9 billion to modernise health services.

The conference also highlighted systemic delays in the reimbursement of new medical‑technology products by the National Organization for Healthcare Services Provision (EOPYY). New diabetes‑management devices have been under negotiation for about 1.5 years, affecting more than one million patients with diabetes. Representatives called the situation a “serious obstacle” to modern care. EOPYY’s new head, Athanasios Zamanis, pledged to speed up negotiations so unresolved cases are closed within six months and announced upcoming legislative steps to improve health‑data use, health‑technology assessment and the replacement of outdated equipment.

Overall, officials presented a dual focus: continuing financial stabilization of hospitals while accelerating the adoption of advanced medical technologies to improve patient outcomes.
