Greek honey faces mixed outlook in French market

Greek honey exports to France have shown significant fluctuations between 2020 and 2024. Export value rose from about €1.57 million in 2020 to a peak of €3.31 million in 2022, then fell to roughly €1.47 million in 2023 before recovering to €1.96 million in 2024. Quantity shipped followed a similar pattern, reaching a high of 686.2 tonnes in 2022 and declining in the subsequent two years. Despite a drop in volume, the average export price increased to $8.17 per kilogram in 2023, indicating higher unit value.

France is one of the EU’s largest honey consumers and relies heavily on imports, making it a key market for Greek producers. The limited presence of Greek honey in France is attributed to the small size of many Greek firms, low outward‑looking activity, and a lack of organized export structures. Industry analysts suggest that adopting a premium‑pricing strategy, strengthening brand identity, investing in modern packaging, and leveraging quality certifications could boost the product’s added value and improve market penetration.
