Greek Inheritance Law Reform Begins September 2026
From September 2026 Greece will implement a comprehensive inheritance law reform. The new framework simplifies public wills, requires two witnesses for secret wills, and allows individuals from age 16 to draft a will. It expands inheritance rights for spouses, children and cohabiting partners, granting a surviving spouse one‑third of the estate when there is one child and one‑quarter when there are multiple children; without children the spouse inherits the entire estate. The legal share can be claimed in cash rather than forced co‑ownership of property. Heirs gain greater protection against excessive debt, and a court‑appointed lawyer will handle estate liquidation. Grandparents are removed from the order of succession, and the law strengthens protection of the family home for tenants and cohabitants.
