Greek Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios unveils optional e‑voting for municipal and regional elections

The new Local Government Code introduces optional electronic voting for municipalities and regions in Greece. Voters who wish to use the system must apply at least a month before the election via a dedicated online platform. On election day, in addition to traditional polling stations, 300‑450 specially equipped centres will be set up where applicants can cast a digital ballot. Voting remains in‑person; the electronic device displayed at the centre will show the voter’s municipality and region. The minister said the measure aims to boost turnout, especially for citizens who work on election day, such as students.

At the Attica Green Expo, Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios also discussed eliminating the two‑ballot system for upcoming local elections, merging first‑ and second‑round votes, and increasing subsidies for municipalities. He highlighted cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Energy on energy community projects in Western Macedonia, and reaffirmed that the electronic voting option is voluntary and will be offered only to those who register in advance.
