Greek island officials tackle police staffing and mosquito control
The Union of Officers of the Greek Police in the Ionian Islands met on 23 June 2026 with the Regional Police Director for the Ionian Islands, General Dimitrios Voulgaris, and the Police Director of Corfu. They highlighted acute staffing shortages in the four island police departments, stressing the need to maintain and increase personnel through the summer months and until September because of a rapid rise in the resident population. The union also urged the gradual addition of new patrol units, calling for funding from national resources or European programs.
On 21 June 2026, Vice‑Regional Governor of the Islands, Nikos Papageorgiou, attended an information event in Metana on mosquito management. The gathering, co‑organized by the Attica Region and the municipality of Troizinia‑Methana, presented a comprehensive strategy against mosquito‑borne disease, noting a budget exceeding €2 million for all municipalities in the Islands unit. Speakers detailed mosquito biology, health risks, preventive actions, and the heightened relevance of such measures under climate change. Authorities emphasized citizen involvement and coordinated efforts between regional administration and local councils to protect public health and support tourism and other economic activities.
