Greek Islands Decarbonization Fund receives 2.3 billion euro approval
The European Commission and the European Investment Bank have approved the investment program for the Islands Decarbonization Fund, a 2.3 billion euro strategic plan designed for the energy and environmental transformation of Greek islands.
Created exclusively for Greece, the fund serves as a unified financial framework to integrate islands into the mainland power grid, develop clean energy, enhance storage capabilities, and promote electromobility. The investment is distributed across several key sectors:
• 1.1 billion euros for electrical interconnections and energy infrastructure in the Dodecanese, Cyclades, and Northeast Aegean islands. • 977 million euros for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) projects combined with storage systems, with a focus on self-consumption photovoltaic installations for homes, businesses, and public buildings. • 200 million euros for multi-purpose dams and reservoirs. • 56 million euros for the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
These investments aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the Greek islands, increase energy autonomy and security, and accelerate the green transition while reducing energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels.
