Greek Islands Face Summer Tourism Strains and Fines

Greek coastal authorities have intensified inspections this summer, deploying the Coast Guard, municipal services, police and environmental agencies to enforce a growing set of beach regulations. Common violations include illegal swimming in ports, ignoring red‑flag warnings and unauthorized water‑sport activities, all of which can attract administrative fines.

In Zakynthos, the local chamber of commerce reports that tourists are spending far less despite rising visitor numbers. President Niki Malafouri said, "There is lower purchasing power in Zakynthos than the rise in arrivals," noting that many guests stay in their accommodation, shop only at supermarkets and avoid local shops because of higher fuel prices, Middle‑East geopolitical tensions and the prevalence of all‑inclusive packages.
