Greece judicial system faces crisis after prosecutor's corruption allegations

A significant controversy has erupted within the Greek judiciary following an article by Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Vassilios Floridis, who alleged a ‘vein of corruption’ within the legal system. Floridis, the brother of Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis, criticized judicial decisions that referred the son of a government official to trial, claiming the charges were unsubstantiated and based on fabricated judgments.

The leadership of the Supreme Court, including its President and Prosecutor, issued a joint statement condemning the remarks. They emphasized that prosecutorial proposals are not binding on courts and argued that public commentary on pending cases exceeds the limits of legitimate criticism, potentially undermining public trust in the justice system. They noted that disagreements should be addressed through formal legal channels rather than the press.

Various judicial associations, including the Union of Judges and Prosecutors, have also responded. While some defend the right to critique, others have criticized Floridis for his public intervention in an ongoing case he personally handled at the Supreme Court level. The incident has sparked intense debate regarding judicial independence, institutional boundaries, and the potential for disciplinary action.
