Greek labor market: Island salaries up to 91% higher than urban centers
A recent analysis of the Greek labor market for the period between January 2025 and July 2026 reveals significant wage disparities based on geography and sector. Research conducted by Chrysos Efkeria, based on 31,631 job advertisements, shows that salaries in the Ionian Islands, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese are between 47% and 91% higher than in major urban centers.
Notably, these higher wages are not limited to seasonal tourism roles; approximately nine out of ten advertisements in these island regions are for non-seasonal positions, including office staff, technicians, drivers, and sales roles. This trend is attributed to businesses attempting to attract workers for permanent residency and to meet stable operational needs.
By sector, shipping offers the highest compensation, with wages 82% above the market average. Other high-paying sectors include hospitality, technical professions, IT, and media, which show a 14% positive deviation. Tourism, transport, logistics, and science/research also see wages roughly 9% higher than average. Additionally, professional experience can increase earnings by up to 40% for those with 5 to 10 years of tenure, and proficiency in German can provide a 27% salary advantage.
