Greek lawmakers challenge private concessions at 27 archaeological sites

Members of the New Left party, led by Sia Anagnostopoulou, have submitted a formal inquiry to the Greek Parliament regarding the concession of 27 retail outlets at major archaeological sites and museums to private entities.

The sites included in the concession are among Greece’s most significant, such as the Acropolis, Delphi, Ancient Olympia, Knossos, Mycenae, and Epidaurus. The agreements reportedly grant private operation for six years, with an option for a six-year extension, in exchange for 50,600 euros per month and a 2% commission on sales.

The lawmakers raised concerns that these facilities were constructed or renovated using public and European funds, noting that the new Acropolis outlet alone received 600,000 euros from the Recovery Fund. The inquiry requests detailed data on previous revenues, construction costs, the studies used to determine lease terms, and the competitive bidding process.
