Greek lawmakers question Sinai Monastery ownership and mineral rights
Members of the SYRIZA-PS parliamentary group, led by Rena Dourou, have submitted a formal inquiry to the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs regarding the ownership status of the Sinai Monastery and its surrounding territory.
The inquiry focuses on ongoing negotiations that may involve converting historical ownership rights into a mere “right of use” within a potentially unbalanced agreement. Of particular concern is the control over the subsoil, which is rich in gold, copper, zinc, and strategically important rare earth elements.
Lawmakers are seeking clarification on whether a “dual ownership status” would protect the rights of the Autonomous Greek Orthodox Church of Sinai and maintain the site’s status as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Additionally, the inquiry asks for information regarding the involvement of US officials, including Deputy Secretary of State Michael Regan and advisor Massad Boules, in these negotiations.
