Greek lawmakers unite on private insurance reforms in Athens dialogue
On 15 July 2026 the Committee of Insurance Intermediaries of the Professional Chamber of Athens hosted a public dialogue on the future of private insurance. The event marked the first joint appearance of representatives from the three main parties—New Democracy (Eυάγγελος Λιάκος), PASOK (Μιλένα Αποστολάκη) and Syriza (Διονύσης Καλαματιανός)—who discussed shared priorities for the sector.
Speakers highlighted the need for a modern regulatory framework, stronger consumer education, and targeted tax incentives to boost private‑insurance uptake, which currently stands at roughly 2.5 % of Greece’s GDP compared with the EU average of about 7.5 %. They also addressed market challenges such as rising health‑insurance premiums, protection of long‑term policyholders, and the importance of healthy competition among insurers. The chamber’s president, Χριστίνα Φυτέα, called private insurance a cornerstone of economic and social resilience, while the chamber’s head, Γιάννης Χατζηθεοδοσίου, stressed the role of political will in implementing existing measures.
