Greek Health Minister's authority to appoint interim board for Panhellenic Medical Association challenged

A proposal to amend article 280 of law 4512/2018 would allow Greece's Minister of Health to appoint a temporary governing committee, a temporary Supreme Disciplinary Council and an audit committee for the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS). The Coordinating Committee of the Assembly of Presidents of the Greek Bar Associations publicly opposed the amendment, arguing it violates the constitutional autonomy of public‑law legal entities (NPD) and could set a dangerous precedent for state interference.

Parliamentary opposition parties, including PASOK‑Movement for Change, submitted a constitutional objection to the clause. The objection was rejected by a parliamentary majority, and Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis defended the measure as constitutional and necessary to resolve an "administrative chaos" surrounding the PIS. Bar Association leaders called on the minister to withdraw the provision, stating that "supervision should not become a political control" and that any issues with the association should be addressed by its own bodies or the judiciary.
