Greek Left Alliance gains backing from SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos

SYRIZA president Sokratis Famellos publicly endorsed the newly formed Greek Left Alliance led by former prime minister Alex Tsipras. He said the alliance represents a "positive political development" and that SYRIZA will not treat it as a rival but as a collaborative partner, urging party members to stand "side by side" with Tsipras' initiative.

Famellos warned that opposing the alliance would be a strategic error, emphasizing the need for unity among progressive forces to challenge the current government, which he described as corrupt and dangerous. He called for a joint progressive ballot and stressed that the re‑alignment does not mean dissolving SYRIZA but strengthening the broader left‑wing front.

The statements were made during internal SYRIZA meetings in early June, highlighting a shift in the party’s approach toward cooperation with Tsipras' new political project.
