Greek Left Coalition calls for national defense to remain non-partisan

The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS) has issued a statement emphasizing that national defense should be treated as a matter of national importance rather than a tool for political or electoral promotion. This follows government statements made after the October 28 military parade.

ELAS argues that defense spending is funded by citizens and should not be subject to partisan exploitation. The coalition has formally requested that the Minister of National Defense provide detailed information to political parties regarding armament programs over the last fifteen years. Specifically, they are seeking data on completed procurements, total costs, ongoing contracts, and future financial obligations.

The coalition also called for transparency regarding maintenance costs, operational support for weapon systems, and the level of involvement from the Greek defense industry. Furthermore, ELAS requested data concerning military personnel, including resignation rates, staff shortages, and planned measures to improve salaries, working conditions, and professional prospects for service members.
