Greek Left Coalition criticizes government migration policy
The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS) has issued a sharp critique of the current government's migration management, alleging a lack of a comprehensive plan for the past seven years. The party claims the administration has prioritized communication strategies and xenophobic rhetoric over substantive solutions for migrant reception, integration, and the repatriation of those ineligible to stay.
ELAS specifically highlighted recent incidents in Crete, where migrants were reportedly exposed to harsh weather conditions while sleeping under trucks, citing this as evidence of inadequate infrastructure and planning. The party further accused the government of linking migration to criminality to deflect responsibility for its own policy failures.
In its statement, ELAS called on Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis to provide accountability regarding the effectiveness of government policies implemented since 2019. The coalition advocated for a coherent policy that combines efficient returns with meaningful integration and functional legal migration processes to meet the country's labor needs.
