Michalis Bekiris faces calls for removal from Prime Minister's Office

Greek opposition parties, including PASOK and SYRIZA, are demanding the removal of Michalis Bekiris from his position as Director of the Prime Minister’s Office at the Hellenic Parliament. The controversy follows reports from the newspaper Documento alleging that Bekiris lacks an official appointment published in the Government Gazette (FEK) and questioning the validity of his academic credentials.

Opposition leaders have raised concerns regarding institutional accountability and national security, noting that an unappointed individual may have access to sensitive information. Some reports suggest Bekiris has characterized his role as a ‘volunteer,’ a claim that has drawn sharp criticism from PASOK, which argues that such a status is incompatible with a high-level government position involving state resources, such as official vehicles and police protection.

Political parties are calling on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to provide clarity on Bekiris’s qualifications, his official status, and whether he has filed required asset declarations. While government representatives have largely deferred to Bekiris’s own statements, the political pressure continues to mount from multiple sides of the political spectrum.
