Greek left parties debate unity and future direction

SYRIZA‑PS parliamentary group leader Φάμελλος reaffirmed that the unity of the progressive camp is the core of the party’s identity, stressing the central committee’s decision to support a broader progressive convergence backed by Alex Tsipras. He ruled out any debate over alternative scenarios, calling the decision binding and essential for presenting clear policy alternatives to the current government.

New Left head Gabriel Sakellarisidis warned that the Greek left cannot remain captive to the 2015 legacy. He criticised a culture of personalism in SYRIZA, urged the development of a collective programme, and highlighted the need to address financing by reallocating large corporate tax exemptions—around €1.26 billion for dividend taxes and €600 million for capital‑gain relief—to fund social policies.

Both leaders called for a renewed, collective approach to revive the left’s credibility and offer a viable alternative to the ruling New Democracy party.
