Greek Leftist Alliance proposes 1% wealth tax on top 1%
The Greek Leftist Alliance (ELAS) has proposed a 1% tax on the total net wealth of the wealthiest 1% of the population. Fragiskos Koutentakis, the party's economic spokesperson, explained that the proposal aims to move beyond taxing only real estate to include financial assets such as stocks, bonds, and bank deposits.
Alexis Tsipras supported the direction of this policy, noting that the wealthiest 1% hold approximately 46% of the country's deposits. The initiative is framed as a measure to address economic inequality and ensure tax justice by creating a comprehensive registry of total assets rather than just property holdings.
