55-year-old Mystras man sentenced for keeping father's corpse in freezer
A 55‑year‑old man from Mystras, Laconia, was convicted in the Monomeleti Minor Offences Court of Sparta and sentenced to eleven months’ imprisonment with a three‑year suspension for false statements to the police. He is accused of having kept the corpse of his 90‑year‑old father in a deep‑freeze unit of a closed hotel for about two and a half years after the father’s death, allegedly to continue receiving the father’s pension (and his mother’s widow’s pension).
Forensic examination of the body showed no signs of foul play; the initial autopsy indicated death from natural, pathological causes, though the exact time of death remains pending further toxicological and histological analysis. The precise period during which pension payments may have been collected is also under investigation, with the alleged fraud charge awaiting a separate ruling. The defendant has expressed remorse, claiming the act stemmed from an inability to accept his father’s loss rather than financial gain.
