Greece considers preventive strike scenario in Aegean crisis

Greek media outlets, notably the newspaper Ta Nea, have reported on a hypothetical four-stage military scenario involving a “preventive strike” against Turkey in the event of a crisis in the Aegean Sea. This scenario is based on strategic remarks made by Greek Chief of General Staff Dimitrios Houpis in late 2025 regarding the capability for long-range strategic strikes.

The hypothetical model suggests that if Greek intelligence (EYP) detects significant Turkish military mobilization—such as the movement of landing ships, UAV fleets, or ballistic missiles like the Bora and Tayfun—the Greek National Defense Council (KYSEA) could authorize a preemptive action. This would involve electronic warfare to disrupt Turkish communications and air strikes using Rafale and F-16 Viper jets to target infrastructure.

Analysts noted that such a strategy carries high diplomatic risks; if intelligence is incorrect, Greece could be viewed internationally as the aggressor.

Separately, reports indicate that Athens is evaluating a plan to expand its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles in the areas south and west of Crete, a move that could impact maritime jurisdiction and regional stability.
