Greek MEPs urge EU sanctions against Turkey over regional threats
Greek Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called for stronger European Union action against Turkey regarding its activities in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
MEP Giorgos Avtias urged the European Commission to implement significant funding cuts to Turkey, arguing that the country seeks EU membership and funds while simultaneously threatening the territorial integrity of Greece and Cyprus. Avtias emphasized that Turkey's actions constitute violations that must be addressed through economic sanctions.
Similarly, MEP Dimitris Tsiodras stated that the EU must function as a unified entity where violations of a member state's borders are treated as threats to the entire Union. He characterized Turkey as a revisionist power that challenges Greek sovereignty and maintains a presence in Cyprus, calling for EU reports to result in substantive consequences rather than mere statements.
