Greece and Libya advance maritime talks while pledging to curb Libya‑Crete migrant route
Greece and Libya held a third round of technical talks in Athens on Monday, July 27, at 11:00 to delimit their exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. The Greek side, represented by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, reaffirmed that the delimitation will follow the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and noted that the talks are part of a broader diplomatic effort that also addresses the Turkish‑Libyan maritime memorandum.
In parallel, Migration Minister Thanos Plevris announced that the government will not allow a permanent migration route from Libya to Crete. He said sea arrivals from Libya have fallen by roughly 30 % and that new reception facilities have been finished in Agia, Chania and are under construction in Heraklion. Cooperation with Libya, Egypt and Frontex has been intensified, and Greece expects the first EU "return‑hub" agreements with third countries to be signed by 2026.
