Greek military faces crisis over resignations and personnel shortages

The Federation of Military Personnel Associations (POES) has issued a warning regarding a “general collapse” within the Greek Armed Forces, specifically targeting Defense Minister Nikos Dendias’s “2030 Agenda.” The federation reports a dramatic increase in resignations, affecting critical assets such as Rafale fighter jets and the new “Kimon” frigates in the Navy.

Significant personnel shortages are being reported in educational and operational sectors. At the Naval Petty Officer Vocational School, a high number of accepted students failed to enroll or left within days. Furthermore, the inability to assign conscripts to certain naval roles has exacerbated the deficit, leading to warnings that services at the Salamina Naval Base may be disrupted or suspended.

POES also criticized the frequent changes to legal frameworks and planning inconsistencies under the current administration. The federation highlighted concerns regarding increased military fatalities and accidents, citing a recent incident in Tanagra where two Air Force pilots died, alleging that transparency and meritocracy have declined under the current defense reforms.
