Greek Minister Michailidou says Greeks should fear ex-PM Tsipras as housing aid rules change

Family and Social Cohesion Minister Domna Michailidou told a radio interview that Greek citizens need to fear former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, criticizing his earlier comments about bank closures.

She then detailed amendments to the “Renovate” housing programme: the electricity‑consumption threshold for a house to be classified as “closed” was doubled from 50 MWh to 100 MWh; the application deadline for closed houses was moved to 31 August (from 31 July); the required co‑ownership share was cut from 50 % to 20 %; and subsidies were raised to a maximum of €36 000, with priority given to the 4 500 closed‑house cases out of 64 000 total certificates.

Michailidou also announced a forthcoming housing bill that will create social‑housing units in inactive military camps in Thessaloniki, Athens and Patras, adding about 2 000 homes and expanding relocation areas. The bill raises the advance‑payment requirement to 50 %, removes the job‑eligibility condition and provides a €10 000 grant. The online platform for the new relocation scheme is slated to open at the end of August.
