Greek Minister Michalis Chrysochoyidis visits Lesbos to reinforce security and curb immigration

Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoyidis met with the Northern Aegean Police leadership on Lesbos, outlining priorities of border security, city policing and protection of residents and visitors. He reported that immigration flows to the island are almost nil and only a few migrants are housed at the Maurovouni reception centre.

Chrysochoyidis highlighted a drop of about 25% in domestic‑violence cases, with roughly 170 incidents recorded in the first half of 2026, but warned that 30‑35% involve repeat offenders linked to mental‑health, alcohol or drug issues. He called for cooperation with health, social‑care and local authorities.

The minister also referenced a pilot scheme granting short‑term visas to Turkish citizens, and responded to a series of severe road accidents that injured two Australian women, ordering a review of the road network, increased traffic‑police checks and a helmet‑use campaign.
