Greek Minister Niki Keramios Advances Gender Pay Equality Law

The Greek Ministry of Labour and Social Security has tabled a bill titled “Strengthening the application of equal pay for equal work” to eliminate gender‑based wage discrimination. Labour Minister Niki Keramios said the legislation ensures that remuneration is determined solely by work and value, not gender. The draft introduces mandatory salary transparency before hiring, prohibits employers from asking candidates about their previous earnings, and requires gender‑neutral job advertisements. During employment, firms must submit annual data on overall pay gaps, bonuses and gaps by employee category; the reporting frequency is yearly for companies with 250 or more workers and every three years for those with at least 100 staff. If unexplained pay differences are found, employers are obliged to correct them. The law also links pay‑gap monitoring to collective bargaining agreements and provides employees the right to request salary information, seek legal recourse, or obtain support from unions or equality bodies. The proposal incorporates 65 suggestions from social partners and an additional 28 from civil society during the public consultation stage.
