Greek Minister Vasilis Kikilias Defends Ferry Ticket Social Discounts

Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias said the reduced fares for students, people with disabilities, large families and other eligible groups are a state‑mandated social policy, not a subsidy to ferry operators. He explained that the reimbursement mechanism covers only the actual cost of the discounts, based on verified tickets and documentation, and does not compensate for profits or provide financial aid to the companies.

Kikilias added that the measure is intended to keep ferry prices affordable and prevent fare increases at a time when fuel costs are rising because of the Middle‑East crisis. The opposition party PASOK criticised the government, accusing it of using public money to subsidise ferry firms and demanding greater transparency on the amount of reimbursements.

The minister rejected these claims, describing the scheme as fully transparent and necessary to protect passengers and support Greek families travelling to the islands.
