Greek Minister Vasilis Kikilias announces first Zakynthos port projects since 1999

Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vasilis Kikilias visited Zakynthos on 26 July, meeting local MP Dionysios Aktypis and municipal officials at the island’s harbour. He said “Στη Ζάκυνθο υλοποιούνται ξανά λιμενικά έργα για πρώτη φορά μετά το 1999” and reported that a new master‑plan for the port has been submitted to the ministry and received a positive assessment.

The plan includes a €1.8 million deepening of the harbour, a pioneering €1 million beach‑restoration project at Argasi to combat coastal erosion, and full‑paving of the dock. Funding of €1.045 million from the EU’s ESFA programme has been secured for infrastructure upgrades. The minister also highlighted the island’s newly‑operational floating ambulance, which has already performed its first medical evacuation, enhancing safety for residents and tourists.

Kikilias praised the unprecedented unanimity among local authorities and stressed that the works will boost the local economy and tourism, contributing to Greece’s national tourism product.
