Greek Minister Vassilis Kikilias discusses maritime policy and sovereignty
Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, addressed several key maritime and geopolitical issues. In a meeting with Dimitra Tseva, the Mayor of Rafina-Pikermi, the Minister discussed the operational challenges of the Rafina port. The discussion focused on managing increased maritime activity, traffic congestion during peak hours, and issues regarding safety and accessibility within the city's urban fabric.
In a separate interview, Kikilias addressed geopolitical tensions, specifically regarding the maritime memorandum between Turkey and Libya. He stated that the Greek government will not take “even a single step back” regarding the country’s sovereign rights.
On domestic policy, the Minister highlighted measures to support the shipping industry and stabilize ferry ticket prices. Despite potential fuel price pressures, ferry fares are expected to remain unchanged for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, a 60 million euro fund has been approved to support unprofitable routes and small islands, and Kikilias called on European institutions to allow member states more fiscal flexibility to support citizens during crises.
