Greek Ministry of Education approves student housing funding
The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports has approved significant funding for student housing allowances for the 2025-2026 academic year as part of the National Student Housing Strategy 2026-2035.
For the University of Thessaly, €2,294,500 has been allocated to support 1,120 students across Volos, Larissa, Trikala, Karditsa, and Lamia. Specifically, 1,011 students will receive €2,000, while 109 students who share accommodation will receive €2,500.
Additionally, the University of Crete will receive €3,358,000 to benefit over 1,600 students in Rethymno and Heraklion. This funding is divided into €2,353,000 for Rethymno and €1,005,000 for Heraklion. In both cases, students receive €2,000 individually or €2,500 when cohabitating.
Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki stated that student housing is "a policy of equality" and a prerequisite for access to higher education. She noted that the government is also working on long-term solutions, including upgrading existing residences, reopening unused capacity, and creating approximately 8,600 new beds through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). Currently, public housing coverage in Greece serves only 3-4% of students, significantly below the European average of 15-18%.
