Greek Ministry of Culture restores historic Xenia building at Mycenae

The Greek Ministry of Culture announced the comprehensive restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic “Xenia” building near the Mycenae archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage location. The project will convert the 1950s modernist structure, designed by architect Kimon Laskaridis, into a mixed‑use cultural venue that will host ancient drama performances by the National Theatre, the State Theatre of Northern Greece and the National Lyric Stage, and will include a shop and café managed by the Cultural Resources Development Agency.

The upgrade includes complete structural repairs, installation of modern electrical and HVAC systems, full accessibility for persons with disabilities, and energy‑efficiency improvements while preserving the building’s original architectural character. The 5,123 sqm property, now owned by the ministry, will feature renovated interior spaces, a roof terrace and new public‑service areas. Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasized that the work “contributes to the overall enhancement of visitor experience at Mycenae and safeguards a significant piece of modern Greek architectural heritage.”
