Greek Ministry of Health announces new EU drinking water safety rules
The Greek Ministry of Health has issued an informative circular regarding new European Union requirements for materials and products that come into contact with drinking water. These regulations apply to items used in the pumping, processing, storage, or distribution of water intended for human consumption.
Under Regulation (EU) 2024/370, all qualifying products placed on the EU market must obtain a European conformity assessment certificate by December 31, 2026. These certificates, which will be valid for five years, must be issued by a notified conformity assessment body and will certify that the product meets minimum health requirements. Certified products will also be required to carry specific European marking.
To ensure safety, only substances, compositions, and ingredients included in European positive lists may be used for the production of these materials. Manufacturers can apply directly to the European Chemicals Agency to have substances added to these lists. A transitional period has been established until December 31, 2032, for products that were assessed under national hygiene requirements and held valid national conformity certificates as of December 31, 2026.
