Greek MP challenges reduction of bank branches and ATMs in rural regions

Andreas Panagiotopoulos, a Member of Parliament for Achaia, has submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of National Economy and Finance regarding the shrinking network of bank branches and ATMs across the Greek periphery.

The MP highlighted that the reduction of physical banking services creates significant barriers for citizens in rural, mountainous, and remote areas. This issue is particularly acute in Achaia due to its geographically dispersed population and high number of elderly residents who may struggle with digital banking services.

Panagiotopoulos argued that while cash withdrawals through retail businesses may serve as a supplement, they cannot replace a formal banking infrastructure. He stated, “A grocery store or a village cafe cannot substitute for a bank,” emphasizing that access to funds must remain safe and equitable regardless of location.

The MP is calling on the government to prevent further closures, establish minimum standards for geographic coverage and accessibility, and ensure that the costs of service are not shifted onto citizens or small business owners.
