Kyriakos Mitsotakis urges ND MPs to prepare for 2027 elections amid OPEKEPE scandal

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis convened the New Democracy (ND) parliamentary group, calling for full unity and readiness ahead of the scheduled national elections in the spring of 2027. In the session he addressed several pressing issues: the OPEKEPE corruption case involving several ND MPs, the upcoming State Budget (DEÞ), and the planned constitutional amendment. He urged MPs to submit proposals for the budget and reaffirmed the government's aim of achieving economic self‑sufficiency.

Opposition parties – PASOK, KKE, SYRIZA, Greek Solution and others – sharply criticised the government's handling of OPEKEPE, accusing the Prime Minister of fostering a tolerance of corruption and of misleading the public about economic and health policies. The debate also featured rumours of an early election, with a deadline of 17 August set for MPs to be present in Athens.

The episode reflects growing political tension in Greece as the ruling party prepares its electoral strategy while facing accusations of institutional arrogance and alleged abuse of EU funds.
