Greek MPs demand urgent improvements at Rio Hospital
Independent MPs Sia Anagnostopoulou and Andreas Panagiotopoulos have submitted a joint parliamentary question to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis regarding the urgent need for upgrades at the University General Hospital of Patras (Rio Hospital).
The inquiry highlights significant deficiencies in rehabilitation services and accessibility for persons with disabilities and chronic patients. Key issues reported by the Regional Federation of Persons with Disabilities of Western Greece and the South Ionian Islands include:
- Severe staffing shortages in the Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which currently operates with only three staff members in a 50-square-meter space. - Inactive beds in the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Clinic, with approximately half of the 21 available beds unused due to lack of personnel. - Critical staffing gaps in the Mediterranean Anemia Unit, where only one of three organic medical positions is filled. - Difficulties in accessing specialized care for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) due to appointment scheduling conflicts. - General accessibility issues regarding hospital wards, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, and medical technology equipment, including diagnostic tools like mammography and MRI machines.
